Thank you for your continued support for SAOC, and we hope you will join us next year.
inside: acting within the confines of [the system]
outside: moving beyond the boundaries [the system]
How do people of color use these two lenses of inside - political representation and power - and outside - changemaking art and restoration - to transform our traditional systems?
The SAOC 2020 Symposium explores this duality, featuring panel discussions on translating representation into political power, as well as the role art can play in social change. This year's symposium will also include a screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary short St. Louis Superman and a conversation with the team behind the film. More details will be released in the coming weeks, including the keynote speaker for the two days.
St. Louis Superman
St. Louis Superman is an Oscar-nominated short documentary film that follows the journey of activist, rapper, and politician Bruce Franks Jr.
Directed by Smriti Mundhra and Sami Khan and produced by Poh Si Teng, the film focuses on Franks time in the Missouri House of Representatives. Franks' journey is illuminated by his activism in Ferguson after the killing of Michael Brown and his struggles with his own childhood trauma from gun violence.
